Adhesion of Individual Attachment Setae of the Spider Cupiennius salei to Substrates With Different Roughness and Surface Energy

چکیده

Dynamic adhesion is a key ability for animals to climb smooth surfaces. Spiders evolved, convergent geckos, dry adhesive system made of setae branching into smaller microtrichia ending as spatulae. Several previous studies concentrated either on the whole claw tuft spider´s foot that consists attachment or single contact elements, with spatula-shaped tips. Here, spider Cupiennius salei was examined and morphology pretarsus fine structure were studied in further detail. Using individual fixed force sensing cantilevers, their at different angles glass substrate measured well performance substrates roughness surfaces surface energies. The results show an variability forces corresponding seta especially tip shape. shapes vary largely even neighboring pretarsal comprises approximately 2,400 setae. Regarding energy substrate, hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene 30% hydrophilic which points importance both van der Waals interactions hydrogen bonds adhesion.

Neurogenesis in the spider Cupiennius salei.

To uncover similarities and differences in neurogenesis in arthropod groups, we have studied the ventral neuroectoderm of the spider Cupiennius salei (Chelicerata, Aranea, Ctenidae). We found that invaginating cell groups arose sequentially, at stereotyped positions in each hemisegment and in separate waves, comparable with the generation of neuroblasts in Drosophila. However, we found no evide...

Neurogenesis in the spider Cupiennius salei

The phylum arthropoda comprises four classes: myriapoda, crustacea, insecta and chelicerata. The monophyly or polyphyly of the arthropoda has been questioned, as has the relationship of the individual classes to each other. The principle difficulty involves deciding which of the morphological similarities that unite these groups are the result of close evolutionary relationships and which repre...

Different functions of different eye types in the spider Cupiennius salei.

The Central American hunting spider Cupiennius salei Keys relies mainly on its mechanosensory systems during prey-catching and mating behaviour. The behavioural relevance of its eight eyes has not been studied before, although their optics and sensitivity suggest highly developed visual capabilities. The visual system was examined in a twofold simultaneous-choice experiment. Two targets were pr...

Spectral sensitivity of the ctenid spider Cupiennius salei.

The spectral sensitivity of adult male Cupiennius salei Keys, a nocturnal hunting spider, was studied in a behavioural test. As known from earlier behavioural tests, C. salei will walk towards a black target presented in front of a white background. In this study, a black target (size 42×70 cm) was presented in a white arena illuminated by monochromatic light in the range 365-695 nm using 19 mo...
